Mid-Life Makeover

March 4th – 8th, 2020
September 9th – 13th, 2020

We are very excited to have confirmed not one but two dates for a special collaboration retreat with the enigmatic writer, broadcaster, art critic, creator of the Gender Equality Trust and all round adventurer Mariella Frostrup. This unique event we’ve dubbed “Mid-life Makeover – The Mindful Menopause Retreat” will build on Mariella’s expertise from her 2019 BBC television programme on the subject. It will set out to de-mystify the menopause and encourage open, mindful and honest discussion. The five days will work towards being present and facing the feelings and emotions around the process, while learning effective breathing techniques, specialised nutritional advice, healing yoga movement, functional fitness and other holistic whole being techniques to help facilitate and better understand this momentous change in a positive, inspiring way.

Over half of the world’s population will experience the menopause however the amount of support and advice does not reflect this number. Alongside our signature coastal hikes and activities, during this special five day programme, Mariella will discuss various inspiring ways of dealing with some of the symptoms of the menopause that in some cases, can last over a few years or more.  Most importantly this retreat will look at how Western medicine and alternative holistic approaches can work hand in hand.

This ground breaking programme will follow a similar flow to our regular Yeotown retreats with a more dynamic portion to begin the day followed by a more Yin/feminine flow of activities in the afternoons. It will include daily yoga sessions, big breaths of fresh air hiking along the Atlantic coast line, training sessions, meditation and mindfulness sessions, and a focused diet. The difference however from our weekly retreats will be all the sessions will be centred around the menopause and dealing with the feelings, emotions and symptoms that can be brought on by this change in the life cycle. The programme will also include a daily massage on each full day including abdominal sacral massage that can be very helpful in treating peri and menopausal women.

Our Co- host Mariella Frostrup will be sharing her experiences and knowledge around the subject having produced and presented a BBC documentary about the menopause in 2019 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bt4c3m. She will be giving a group talk on the subject in regards to what her extensive research has uncovered alongside co-hosting the programme. Over both the meals and during the more formal lecture, guests will have the opportunity and be encouraged to ask questions and share with the group their own experiences and struggles in regards to the menopause.

As always, when it comes to our health, what we eat is paramount to how we feel so the menu will be designed to specifically support the hormonal changes taking place, and specific foods and supplements known to help menopause will be peppered throughout the menu over the 5 days. The nutrition workshop will be given by Hazel Hutchinson, the Yeotown nutritionist, where she has curated a specific talk around optimal nutrition for women during the menopause.  It will also double as a Q & A session and Hazel will discuss some of the tests specific to the menopause that can be taken in regards to hormone levels. Should the guest wish there will be an opportunity to take any of the below tests:

  • Menopause Test: progesterone/oestrodiol, testosterone, oestrogen metabolism & bone absorption
  • Menopause Plus Test: the above hormones plus adrenals minus the bone absorption
  • One Day Hormone Test: the 3 different oestrogens, progesterone, testosterone, adrenals and melatonin

The appropriate test would be tailored to the individual depending on other concerns eg hormonal cancers, osteoporosis. If you are interested in one of these tests you would need to book a 1-1 appointment with Hazel, which would take place during the five day programme, at which time she will conduct the test. Once the test results are back she will follow up with a 2nd nutritional 1-1 which would take place via Skype. (The 1-1’s can be requested during the booking process and there is a separate fee for the personal consults and then tests if required)

The daily programme would also include mindfulness meditation, learning to sit with the feelings and emotions brought up by the changes that may be taking place and offering a safe space afterwards for guests to discuss what has come up for them.

The five day programme is designed to be both informative and inspirational, offering new tools to support you in the inevitable changes that midlife brings. If you would like to join please let us know which week would suit, 4th – 8th March or 9th -13th September, and we will send the room availability/choices which start at £2100 for the five days.
