We Don’t Retreat. We Don’t Reset. We Realign.

For years, we used the same words everyone else in wellness uses. Retreat. Reset. Detox. They were the words people searched for, and the words journalists reached for when they wrote about us.

But the longer we did this work, the less those words fitted what actually happens here. So we stopped using them. I want to explain why, because it says a lot about what Yeotown is.

Why not a retreat?

To retreat is to withdraw. To step back from life, hide away for a while, then return to exactly where you left off. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it isn’t what our guests come for, and it isn’t what they leave with.

Nobody walks up a hill in North Devon in the rain, or swims in the Atlantic off Madeira, in order to hide. They come to meet themselves properly. It’s an advance, not a retreat.

Why not a reset?

A reset suggests you can press a button and go back to factory settings. Five days of green juice and early nights, and you’re wiped clean.

I don’t believe people work like that. You can’t erase the life you’ve lived, and you wouldn’t want to. Everything you’ve been through is part of you. What you can do is bring it all back into line.

So, realign

Realignment is the word that finally felt true. When guests arrive, they usually aren’t broken. They’re out of alignment. The body is doing one thing, the mind another, and the spirit has been quietly ignored for months. The work is to bring body, spirit and mind back into the same place at the same time.

We do that with very simple things. Moving every day, outdoors, in a way that genuinely challenges you. Food that’s grown with care and tastes of something. Stillness, through yoga and meditation, so the mind has somewhere to land. Proper sleep, which tends to follow on its own. And a lot of fresh air.

None of it is a gimmick, and none of it requires a blood panel. I sometimes say that if we were a clinic, we’d be a medical centre for the soul. That’s as close as I can get to describing it.

What changes when you realign

The thing I hear most often at the end of a week isn’t “I feel rested”, although people do. It’s “I feel like myself again.” Clearer. Stronger. Less pulled in ten directions at once. Often with a much better sense of what deserves their time and energy, and what doesn’t.

That feeling doesn’t vanish the moment you get home, because nothing has been papered over. You haven’t retreated from your life or wiped it clean. You’ve lined it back up, and you know what it feels like now.

Strong in body. Clear in mind. That’s what we’re here for, in Devon and on Madeira.
